Digital Warfare in 2020

2008 was a monumental year for campaigning and organizing online. And while Barack Obama’s first campaign revolutionized the way we use data and online tools in politics, Donald Trump’s team changed the landscape in 2016 with the most advanced digital political operation in history. In 2020, we will only see more sophisticated digital operations, coupled with unprecedented digital spending. It’s difficult to overstate how much the game has changed in just 12 years.

Political advertising on digital platforms like Facebook, Google and YouTube only scratches the surface of how the use of digital tools and more insidious forms of manipulation are playing into campaigns and politics broadly. 2020 will be the year of digital warfare, and real and honest information is at stake.

In a new memo, the Future Majority team is taking a deep dive into the digital warfare that will shape the 2020 elections and beyond, including:

  • How digital is playing a key role in the 2020 elections and national politics;
  • An analysis of skyrocketing digital ad spending;
  • A look at the often nefarious digital warfare that campaigns and foreign nations are using to disrupt the 2020 elections;
  • Recommendations for how Democrats can level the playing field and catch up to the Trump-aligned digital machine
